What are the best beaches in Skåne?

Skåne's best beaches: every coast, and the three we love most

L.G.foto · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons

Short answer

Skåne has coastline on three sides — Kattegat, Öresund and the Baltic — and around 500 km of it, according to Länsstyrelsen. The east, south and much of the west are sand; the northwest around Kullaberg is rock and stone. Our favourite is Knäbäckshusen on Österlen, which won a 2023 reader poll for Sweden's most beautiful beach. Next come the wild dunes of Sandhammaren and the shallow white sand of Skanör–Falsterbo.

Editorial answer: our opinion, based on the sources listed below. No venue has paid to appear.

Three coasts, two kinds of beach

Länsstyrelsen Skåne describes the province as having three coasts and roughly 50 Swedish miles — about 500 km — of shoreline. Kattegat meets the northwest, Öresund runs past Malmö, Lomma and Helsingborg, and the Baltic, including Hanöbukten, washes the south and east. The landscape changes with the coast: long sandy beaches in the east, south and much of the west, and rocky, stony shores in the northwest.

That gives Skåne two very different beach days. On the sand coasts you wade out a long way in shallow water, which is ideal with children. Around Kullaberg and Arild you swim from rocks, steps and piers into deeper, clearer water. Choose by mood: lazy and sandy, or cliffs and a cold plunge.

Before you go: water quality, dogs and protected areas

Busy beaches are registered as EU bathing waters: the municipality samples them during the season and reports to the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (HaV). The results are on HaV's Badplatsen, but lab analysis takes time, so the latest sample is not a guarantee of today's water.

Dog rules differ from beach to beach. At Knäbäckshusen and Haväng dogs are banned from the beach 1 June–31 August, 08:00–20:00; on Vellinge's beaches the ban runs 15 May–31 August, 09:00–19:00. Many of the best beaches are in nature reserves with their own rules: at Sandhammaren, for example, tents, camping vehicles, fires and loose dogs are not allowed. Read the sign at the car park — it is the rule that counts.

Our pick 1: Knäbäckshusen — the most beautiful beach in Sweden?

We think so, and we are not alone: in 2023 Knäbäckshusen won the travel site Svenska destinationer's poll for Sweden's most beautiful beach, ahead of Sandhammaren, as Kristianstadsbladet reported. It is a reader poll, not an official title — but stand at the top of the path and you understand the votes. Fine white sand, trees leaning out over the beach and clear Baltic water, right next to Stenshuvud National Park on Österlen.

The beach is in Simrishamn municipality and also goes by Rörums strand. It has a price for its beauty: the slope behind it is eroding. Storm Babet damaged the area in 2023, and the municipality still warns of landslides and falling trees. A new staircase was finished in July 2026, but follow signs and barriers and stay away from the edge of the slope.

The municipality lists a toilet and 120 parking spaces, and warns that they fill quickly — use the marked spaces and keep emergency routes clear. Without a car, take SkåneExpressen 3 to the stop on road 9 and walk the roughly 2.5 km along Rörumstrandsvägen. Dogs are not allowed on the beach 1 June–31 August, 08:00–20:00. Why we pick it: come on a calm morning in early summer, and it is hard to imagine a more beautiful place to swim.

Our pick 2: Sandhammaren — dunes, pines and open sea

Sandhammaren, in Ystad municipality at Skåne's south-eastern corner, is the wild one. It is a nature reserve and Natura 2000 site, with wind-shaped dunes, pine woodland and low, wind-pruned oaks behind a broad white beach. Sand carried along from the eroding Löderup–Hagestad coast keeps building the dunes, and the lighthouse stands among them.

The sea here is open and can be dangerous. Visit Skåne warns that some conditions create strong undercurrents and asks visitors to check the information at the car park. On a calm day it is glorious; on a windy day, admire the waves from the sand.

Ystad municipality lists toilets, picnic tables, parking in the northern and southern parts, and a boardwalk from the southern car park almost down to the sea; the reserve can also be reached by bus. The reserve rules: no tents, camping vehicles, fires or loose dogs, and keep out of fenced areas. Why we pick it: it feels like the edge of the world. Bring a picnic and stay till the light goes golden.

Our pick 3: Skanör–Falsterbo — shallow white sand and bathing huts

Where Knäbäckshusen and Sandhammaren are dramatic, Skanör and Falsterbo are easy — and the closest of the three to Lomma. Both are in Vellinge municipality, at the tip of the Falsterbo peninsula. Vellinge describes Falsterbo's beach as white sand with a sandy seabed and dunes, and Skanör's as fine sand, shallow water and colourful bathing huts.

The shallow sandbanks and eelgrass beds offshore are protected, and the coast is constantly reshaped by wind and waves. Skanör has toilets and drinking water by the beach, parking nearby and places to eat at the harbour; Falsterbo has kiosks and food, and can be reached by bus, bike or car.

Two rules worth knowing. Dogs are not allowed on Vellinge's bathing beaches or dunes 15 May–31 August, 09:00–19:00; the dog beach is north of Skanör harbour. And Måkläppen, the sand spit off Falsterbo, is not a summer outing: entry is forbidden 1 February–31 October, including the water around it, and dogs are banned all year. Some nesting areas on Skanörs ljung are closed 1 April–15 July. Why we pick it: perfect for children, beautiful at sunset, and an ice cream at the harbour afterwards.

    Skåne's beaches in pictures

Skåne's beaches are not one look but many. In the east, Stenshuvud and Haväng have sand under beech woods and a river running out into the sea, while Sandhammaren is all wide white sand and open horizon. In the south-west, the dunes at Kämpinge and Falsterbo glow at sunset and the white bathing huts line up in the marram grass.

Along the Öresund, Ribersborg and Sibbarp put a city beach and the bridge in the same view, and further north the coast turns stony and intimate at Solviken below Mölle. Every photo below shows the beach it names; the photographer and licence are under each picture.

Öresund: city beaches and our home coast

The Öresund coast is where most people swim: shallow, sandy and close to the cities. Lomma and Bjärred sit right in the middle — see our own swimming guide for the details.

    Österlen and the east coast

Österlen has Skåne's most beautiful stretch of sand, in our opinion, from Knäbäckshusen past Stenshuvud to Haväng. Further north, Åhus has soft sand on the Ålakusten coast.
