Skanör

In the Middle Ages Skanör and Falsterbo were the heart of the herring trade: the great Skåne market, tied to the Hanseatic towns, gathered merchants and fishermen on this sandy tip of land every autumn. The two towns were joined in 1754, and you still see the history in two medieval churches — S:t Olofs kyrka in Skanör and S:ta Gertruds kyrka in Falsterbo — and in the castle mound and moat of Skanörs borg, out in the Flommen reserve.

Today Skanör is a summer town of low houses and green lanes around a busy harbour. Colourful bathing huts line Skanör havsbad right next to the harbour, where the water is shallow and the sand fine, and there are bathing jetties north of the harbour. At the harbour itself you can eat by the water; Rögeriet has its restaurant and shop at Hamnvägen 1.

Start with a swim by the bathing huts, walk round the harbour and the old town, and finish with the churches or a walk into Flommen, where paths and Skåneleden cross flat coastal meadows and lagoons. In autumn, continue to Falsterbo fyr and Nabben for the bird migration; dogs are not allowed on Vellinge's bathing beaches 15 May – 31 August, 09:00–19:00, but there is a dog beach north of Skanör harbour.

Falsterbonäset is south of Malmö, the closest of Skåne's big coastal day trips to Lomma. By car, follow the E6 south towards Trelleborg and take the Skanör–Falsterbo exit onto road 100. By bus, SkåneExpressen 15 from Malmö now ends at Skanör Haga, with regional line 300 continuing through Skanör and Falsterbo — plan the trip in Skånetrafiken's journey planner.
