Falsterbo fyr & Nabben

Länsstyrelsen Skåne describes Falsterbo as one of the world's richest areas for birds in late summer and autumn. Birds heading south funnel down the peninsula before crossing the water, and Nabben, the south-western point, has been a classic counting site in most autumns since the early 1940s. Falsterbo fågelstation highlights seabirds, small songbirds and above all raptors, especially when the wind is south-westerly; in September the raptors circle on thermals over Skanörs ljung, Sweden's largest wet heath.

Falsterbo fyr, the lighthouse, dates from 1796 and was designed by Olof Tempelman; it began as a coal-fired light with homes for the keepers. The area round the lighthouse is a good alternative to Nabben on windy days, and is especially good for small migrating birds.

Come on a September morning, bring binoculars, and stand a little apart from the regular birders — they are happy to point things out if you ask. Never go near the bird station's catching nets. Combine with a swim at Falsterbo beach, the seals at Måkläppen from the shore, and lunch in Skanör.

Falsterbonäset is south of Malmö, the closest of Skåne's big coastal day trips to Lomma. By car, follow the E6 south towards Trelleborg and take the Skanör–Falsterbo exit onto road 100.
